NCS (March 1998 to present)

• TECHNICAL SUPPORT (December 1999 to present)  I provide technical support by telephone for financial aid advisors using Department of Education financial aid software, and respond to a variety of questions about the financial aid process.
• SCORING SUPERVISOR (March 1998 to July 1999)  Supervised professional scorers on a number of two- to eight-week scoring projects. Projects involved scoring student assessments for various states.

THE COMPUTER GUYS (March 1996 to present)

• OWNER, THE COMPUTER GUYS  The Computer Guys is a computer repair and consulting business specializing in in-home hardware and software installation, Internet setup, and general instruction. The Computer Guys can also design and maintain Web pages, scan images and text, create flyers, business cards, brochures, and newsletters, prepare resumes, write advertising copy, and edit and proofread any kind of written material.

  In addition, The Computer Guys creates shareware and donationware for the Internet community. Web-O-Rama, the flagship program, has received excellent reviews from many respected shareware sites.

ALLEN PRESS, INC. (April 1985 to February 1997)

• CODING COORDINATOR (December 1994 to February 1997; July 1987 to September 1992)   Coding is the writing of computer codes on manuscripts in order to format text, tables, and equations for typesetting, as well as editing manuscripts to conform to style sheets in both physical appearance and style details. Allen Press typesets over two hundred journals, each with its own unique specifications. As coding coordinator, I was responsible for keeping coding and style materials current for each journal. I coded and edited jobs too difficult or time-sensitive for contract workers. I prepared samples of new journals, which involved writing formatting commands for the typesetting computers, created coding templates and style sheets, and worked closely with editors and in-plant personnel. I investigated and solved problems for Allen Press customer service representatives and for the photocomposition, proofreading, and paste-up areas.
• COMPUTER TYPESETTING SPECIALIST (September 1992 to December 1994)  I performed a variety of tasks in the photocomposition department, including correcting revised proofs, working with tabular material, and typesetting complex mathematical equations. I was trained on the Desktop Pro, an advanced paging system.
• REVISION COORDINATOR (December 1986 to July 1987)  I established procedures for having independent contractors check corrections to proofs revised by editors and authors. This had previously been a time-consuming in-house process. I created guidelines and worked closely with contractors.
• PROOFREADER (April 1985 to December 1986)  An intensive training period that included learning editing marks, style conventions for scientific material, typographic specifications, and journal layout and design.

THE THRIFTY NICKEL (August 1984 to January 1985)

• TYPESETTER/PROOFREADER  I operated a CompuGraphics 9500 self-contained typesetting/photoprocessing computer. My job involved typesetting and proofreading classified-type advertisements, designing display advertisements for local businesses, and pasting up the newspaper.

CONTINUING EDUCATION (June 1979 to August 1984)

• MAIL-ROOM CLERK  Half-time student position with the University of Kansas. I labeled, sorted, and mailed brochures for Continuing Education courses, operated a postage machine, kept a mail log, and ran a small offset press and folding machine. I trained new employees and acted as supervisor in supervisor's absence.

Interests

• I enjoy writing fiction and non-fiction and had both published while I was a student at the University of Kansas. I am a member of the Kansas Anthropological Association and have participated in several archeological excavations through their summer field school, including work at the Pony Express Station in Hanover, Kansas, in 1992. I have played lead and acoustic guitar in several local bands and have a continuing interest in writing songs and in playing the guitar and piano. I became interested in computers and the Internet in the early 1990s and spend most of my spare time learning various programming languages, accumulating a library of computer-related books, and repairing people's computers.
